About the book

December has come to Artemis Base Camp, near the Moon's South Pole, and it is the first Christmas any child has spent on the Moon. Leo has promised Noa, who is five and from Florida, that she will see real snow this Christmas, snow that falls from up. His blender turns ice cubes into a slushie and freezer frost squashes into gray paste, so Dr. Tanaka shows him how a snow crystal really grows, one piece at a time, on a fiber from the ear of Comet, his stuffed dog.

Meanwhile a speaker in the radio lab ticks eleven times a second from somewhere out in space, and the kids test their guesses one at a time, the way scientists do. Alma runs the Christmas Committee with a notebook and a very long list, until one order and one joke too many make Leo quit. The story runs from December 1 to Christmas morning in twelve illustrated chapters, so a class can read it across December. Readers of Moon Kids: An Artemis Adventure are back with Comet and the robots, and new readers can start right here.

Real science under the tree

Each chapter hides one real idea inside the story.

How snow really forms

A snow crystal grows when water vapor freezes onto a tiny speck, as Ukichiro Nakaya showed in 1936. Star-shaped crystals almost always have six arms.

A signal from space

Radio waves are a kind of light our eyes can't see. The kids test one guess at a time to find out what is ticking.

Planets around other stars

A blue glass ornament circling a lamp shows how astronomers spot a planet by the shadow it casts on its star.

A video to Grandma

A message crosses from the Moon to Earth in about 1.3 seconds, then lands at giant dishes on the ground.

Christmas around the world

Why Christmas doesn't arrive everywhere at once, and why it falls in summer in Australia.

Check the computer

LUNA-1, the base AI, gives answers that sound right even when they are wrong, so the kids learn to check.
