Christmas Books for Kids

Winter stories to read together, from the first snow to Christmas morning.

The weeks before Christmas are the best time of the year for reading together: long evenings, a blanket, a mug of cocoa and one more story before the light goes out. These are our winter and Christmas books for kids, sorted by age, so you can find the right one for a stocking or a bedtime.

You'll find a frost spirit who paints the windows, the first Christmas any child has spent on the Moon, the Ukrainian St. Nicholas who leaves a gift under the pillow on December 6, and the stranger winter visitors of old Europe, from Krampus to the Yule Cat.

Questions from parents

Which book is best for a 4- or 5-year-old?

Frost's Winter Tales. Each of its ten stories is short enough for one bedtime, and Frost speaks straight to the listener as "little one."

Is there a book to read through December?

Two. Moon Kids: Christmas Special runs from December 1 to Christmas morning in twelve chapters, and Before Santa Claus has eighteen stories to read one a night in the weeks before Christmas.

Are the Christmas legends too scary?

The Long Night Library stories are spooky enough to thrill and always end warm. For younger or more sensitive children, start with Frost's Winter Tales or Before Santa Claus.

Which languages are they in?

All of them are in English. Christmas in Ukraine is also available in Ukrainian and Spanish.
